The Start of Autumn: Welcoming the Seasonal Shift with Gentle Practices

Cool Breezes Signal Summer's End as the Start of Autumn Arrives.
Yet, summer's heat lingers. Weather after the Start of Autumn remains warm and dry, with significant warmth still present.
The Start of Autumn is a special solar term, marking a key transition point in the natural cycle. Following the growth of spring and summer, nature begins to gather inward from this day. During this time, many people choose to adjust their daily routines and self-care practices.
Start of Autumn: Seasonal Wellness – Three Gentle Areas of Focus.

Three Focus Areas: Adapting to Warmth, Supporting Digestion, and Easing into Drier Days
Adapting to Lingering Warmth:
Summer warmth persists during the Start of Autumn period. Daytime temperatures can still be high during outdoor activities. It can be helpful to continue practices to stay cool, maintain hydration, enjoy fresh vegetables and fruits, and ensure adequate rest.
Supporting Digestive Ease:
As summer heat lingers, the digestive system may benefit from gentle support. Focusing on a balanced diet that nurtures stomach comfort can be a valuable part of the seasonal transition.
Easing into Drier Conditions:
After the Start of Autumn, the air often becomes drier. This can lead to sensations like thirst or dry skin. Enjoying soups, porridges, and foods traditionally used during drier weather can provide a sense of comfort and balance.

Gentle Seasonal Practices for Autumn
In many traditional wellness systems, autumn is a time to pay special attention to lung comfort. As the air becomes drier, these gentle practices can be incorporated into one's routine.
Nourishing Dietary Choices:
Include foods like sesame seeds, walnuts, glutinous rice, honey, pears, and yogurt in your diet. Warm porridges are also valued for their comforting qualities during this season.
Mindful of Seasonal Food Shifts:
There is a traditional saying that suggests limiting very cooling fruits like watermelon after the Start of Autumn. Pears, enjoyed during dry autumn afternoons, are often considered a refreshing seasonal choice.

Mindful Breeze & Cultivating Calm:
As autumn arrives, it can be comfortable to be mindful of cool drafts. Light scarves may offer warmth and protection. Cultivating a sense of inner calm is also a beneficial practice for this time of year.
Gentle Movement:
Gentle activities like Tai Chi, Qigong, slow jogging, or mindful breathing exercises are well-suited to the season. The goal is light movement that brings a mild sense of warmth and well-being.

Reishi Mushroom in Traditional Practice
Reishi (Lingzhi) holds a place in ancient texts and cultural traditions, particularly in relation to autumn wellness practices. After the Start of Autumn, some individuals choose to incorporate Reishi products like spore powder, tea, or extracts into their daily routine as a way to connect with this seasonal tradition. Reishi can also be used in daily cooking for its cultural significance and unique, earthy flavor.* Reishi is also part of traditional practices associated with supporting a calm state of mind and restful sleep.
