There is a kind of bioactive components that are found in Ganoderma Lucidum, but they are always ignored. That is sterol.
Just as all living things are made up of cells, so is Ganoderma lucidum. For Ganoderma lucidum, sterol is the main component of the cell membrane, and its cell membrane stability is maintained by its lipophilic action; however, from the pharmacological activity, sterol can inhibit the growth of tumor cells, which has special significance for those who pursue health.
Spores are the germ cells of Ganoderma lucidum, and their cell membranes are rich in sterols.
Zhang Jinsong, Director of the Edible Fungi Research Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences, pointed out at the 9th World Edible Fungi Biology and Products Conference held in Shanghai in November 2018 that his research team has isolated four sterol components including ergosterol from Ganoderma lucidum spore powder. Each sterol component has an inhibitory effect on the proliferation of tumor cells.
Since ergosterol is the most important sterol component in Lingzhi spores, Zhang Jinsong believes that ergosterol is very suitable as a quality control index for the production of spore powder raw materials, spore powder and spore oil products.
In other words, the final spore powder and spore oil products, if they can contain more ergosterol, are more secure for consumers' health. However, ergosterol content is also affected by many factors such as
raw material source, cell-wall broken or not, cell-wall breaking time and extraction technology.
Now, we already know that sterol is an important active ingredient of spore powder and spore oil which can inhibit tumor growth. At the same time, it is also known that such active ingredients are deeply affected by the source of Reishi Mushroom raw materials, the technology of breaking cell walls, the extraction process, and the standardization of the production process.
